Over two years, the EVA Carrot network evaluated 60 landraces from 4 European genebanks, originating from 16 countries. Authors analyzed phenotypic data from multilocation field trials in ten locations across Europe and estimated the influence of the environment on trait expression and variability. Three different genotyping approaches were deployed and showed comparable population structures, allowing selection of the most effective approaches in future applications.
Results were published in Acta Horticulturae in late 2023. Read more in this article.
In August 2022, the EVA Carrot network presented the first results of their joint evaluations of 60 carrot accessions at the International Horticultural Congress in Angers, France, and the International Carrot Conference in Mt Vernon, USA. Read more
The EVA Carrot network is one of three vegetable networks currently functional within EVA. It builds on the experience and expertise of the ECPGR Umbellifer Crops Working Group and the French Daucus network, a successful public private partnership aimed at preservation and use of local carrot genetic resources.
Within the EVA network, carrot accessions from genebanks across Europe will be genotyped and evaluated in laboratory and field trials for a number of traits of interest for carrot breeding, including agronomic and quality characteristics as well as resistance or tolerance to important pests affecting carrot production. Network partners provide their complementary expertise and capacity and together generate datasets that will help identify interesting materials among the evaluated accessions to be included in future breeding activities.
