Field pea (Pisum sativum ssp. sativum var. arvense L.) is a cool-season annual legume species (Sayar and Han 2016). It is cultivated as feed or food. In many developing countries pods are also consumed as a vegetable and are harvested in an immature state and frozen to make a convenience food (Maxted and Ambrose 2001). Field pea dry seeds contain 20-30% of protein and are regarded as an excellent protein source. It is also regarded as a suitable species for crop rotations as it provides soil nitrogen for the following crops. Field pea is also characterised by cold tolerance.
